“She’d slept in, got covered in mud, almost set fire to the ladies’ room, and then lost her job. So what else could happen?” Sweet Things.
“As an author, and like many other authors, my mind works in weird ways. My characters dictate what I write. To me they are real. We have raging arguments (most times they win), they sweet-talk me into doing what they want, and at times flat out refuse to be who I think they should.
When I started writing Sweet Things I had in mind that my heroine would come from a loving nurturing background that she rebels against as a teenager. But she had other ideas. The book is above all a ménage…romance with characters in their 50s—two bisexual men and a beautiful woman. It is a HEA, that outcome is fixed.
But it also deals with the way child abuse affects a person as an adult. How the bad things that happen as a child can have a flow-on effect in the present.
Was it hard to write? You bet. So many times I wanted to go back to my original plot line but the more I wrote, the more her background made sense. My heroine has to work her way through her past to find her future, one filled with absolute love. Don’t get me wrong, 99% of the book is all about the relationship between the three… But my heroine’s reactions stem from her childhood.
To balance the dark, as well as having those two sexy hunks, I added in Aunt Mildred. And Aunt Mildred has become a readers’ favourite Aunt and they all want one in their family.
I started writing as a dare—I’m an Australian artist. And now, with this my 23rd book, I’ve found another occupation to add to my creative side. My books always have much older characters, in their late 40s, 50s and 60s.
I’m out to prove that being older doesn’t mean we aren’t intriguing, desirable, open to challenges and willing to experiment. Sexy isn’t just for the under 30s! And yes I’m a much older single woman—older but not necessarily wiser.”
