The Wordicle’s Author’s Leak presents
Olivia Jane Michaels and her book “The Angel of Clerkenwell (Smollett, Wolfstein and Bonney Book 1).”
There are many fiction detective type of books in the literary world. The Angel of Clerkenwell however, is a top choice. See what Author Olivia Jane Michael’s has to say.
From the author:
“The Angel of Clerkenwell is the first of what seems to be turning into a series of Victorian detective tales. I say “seems to be” because I never actually planned it this way, but I grew to love my three protagonists so much that by the end of The Angel, I knew I hadn’t done with them—nor they with me.
The first of these is James Smollett—a Scottish consulting detective who relies on intuition and his empathy for others to solve his cases. Next we have Dr Jakob Wolfstein, the son of German emigres and an eminent neurologist with a logical and unsentimental approach to life. Last but not least, comes Evangelina Bonney (Evie)—an orphaned kitchen maid who begins the novel as a victim but gradually finds the courage to take her destiny into her own hands.
The plot of The Angel of Clerkenwell revolves around the mysterious abduction of three children from London’s Clerkenwell district—an area known as Little Italy because of the large number of Italian immigrants who lived there. The villain—the Angel of the title—is someone whose traumatic war-time experiences as a child led to the appalling crimes with which the novel begins—but you’ll have to read the book to discover their identity!
I suppose my inspiration for the story grew out of my love of Victorian novels; over the years I have devoured the works of Wilkie Collins and Charles Dickens, the Brontes and Mrs. Gaskell, but would you believe that what ended up as a Victorian gothic horror/detective story actually started life as a time travel fantasy? (I still plan to write that version one day!)
I came late to writing—I was 60 when I published my first novel—but with this, my third, now under my belt, I suppose I can safely say that I have at last fulfilled a lifelong ambition. Perhaps I needed 50 odd years of reading before I was ready, or maybe I just needed my kids to fly the nest to have the time, but whatever the reason, I hope my story proves that it’s never too late to follow your dreams!”
