Life and Other Shortcomings is a collection of stories and, so I got to spend time with a variety of colorful characters. It’s very different than novel-writing in that way. When you write a novel, you might only get to create a handful of characters. The stories in Life and Other Shortcomings are interconnected and expand across time and place. I found exploring those aspects interesting.
What should readers take?
Life and Other Shortcomings dives deep into relationships, depicting interpersonal dynamics, shining a light on a certain point of view or behavior. While many of the stories are told from a female perspective, a number of stories have male protagonists. Family dynamics and psychology are always at play in determining who these characters are and what they might say and do.
The biggest challenge for me was in being a new writer and trying to hold onto the idea that I was authoring a book. That dream felt too big for me. I had to fake it till I made it. Taking time for myself and honoring the writing process, sometimes felt fruitless as I was working on my own, without feedback, for months. But I persevered, published one story at a time, and the result has been gratifying.
Any secret meanings?
I wouldn’t say there’s a secret meaning, although the word patriarchy is never used, and the book is largely based on my feelings and experiences as a woman in the world. While it’s no secret that women have been subjugated, these stories are relatable, illustrating every day occurrences.
The inequities and abuse the women in these stories (and in our real lives) face may appear benign on the surface, but underneath there is brewing tension, anger and a push for change. In ways, big and small, my female characters are growing and embracing their empowerment.
Life and Other Shortcomings has been the impetus for many interesting and deep conversations about relationships, women in society and patriarchy. It’s been the springboard for discussions about the role culture and family expectations play in decision-making.
But mostly, I think readers want a good story. They want to have access to the world of others and they want to laugh. While Life and Other Shortcomings deals with some weighty topics, it’s written in clear, easy to digest prose. The focus is on the storytelling. And there is nothing like a good story.
